This remarkable device, housed in a box measuring 10.5” x 6.5” x 4.25” tall, is a testament to early 20th-century medical and technological collaboration. Its winding mechanism still operates, spinning impressively, though the machine itself remains untested and is sold with its current contents as shown in the accompanying photos.
Despite showing signs of age with a deteriorating box, this set is considered museum-grade, reflecting its historical significance and the craftsmanship of its era. The Mackenzie Ink Polygraph was designed to record the physical manifestations of the heart and pulse, marking an important advancement in medical diagnostics.
Adding to its rich history, this polygraph was donated to the Luzerne County Medical Society by Dr. Charles H. Miner of Wilkes Barre, PA. Its provenance and functionality make it an extraordinary find for collectors, historians, and museums dedicated to preserving the evolution of medical technology. For sale is a Berkeley Psychograph Polygraph $1,400.00
For sale is a Berkeley Psychograph Polygraph, a vintage and antique lie detector from the 1930s. This unique item was produced and sold by C. D. Lee, a former Captain of the Berkeley Police Department in Berkeley, California. Lee crafted these devices from the 1930s to the 1950s across three different cities, initially in Berkeley. This particular model is housed in either a Mahogany or Walnut case and has been a part of my lie detection instruments collection for numerous years. Unlike the standard Psychograph, which is a cardio-pneumo device, this version was specifically made as a cardiograph, with the cardio component situated in the lower channel. Notably, the pneumograph typically found at the top is absent, and the stimulation marker, usually central, has been relocated to the top. The middle channel remains unused.
This Psychograph, bearing the serial number M101, is particularly unique—it is the only one I have encountered starting with an ‘M’. It is presumed to be a custom-made piece for a psychiatrist, as evidenced by accompanying paperwork and its unique features. From my observations over the last four decades, it appears that Lee began his serial numbering at 101, and this could very well be the first of its series. The ‘M’ likely denotes a medical use.
Currently, the unit is in excellent condition for its age, approximately 90 years old. It comes with the pump bulb assembly, a bandage arm cuff, a stimulation marker, and pens. While the chart drive functions well, the stimulation marker is inactive, and I have not tested the cardiograph under pressure to avoid damaging the delicate rubber membranes connected to the pen shafts inside the device. Any operational use or display might require some maintenance. The chart paper used in this Psychograph is a rare find, different from the standard 6-inch paper used in most polygraphs from the era, making it ideal primarily for display purposes. It’s worth noting that I replaced a broken original handle with one consistent with post-1930s models, though the original handle is included.
This piece is offered as an Antique or Vintage Collectible, perfect for museum collections related to the American Psychological Association (APA) or as a unique prop for films set in the mid-1930s. It has been securely packed and stored, and is sold AS-IS without guarantees. Shipping is available only within the United States, but I am open to reasonable inquiries before bids are placed. Please examine the photos carefully for a better understanding of the condition and feel free to ask any questions.
Also included with this instrument is a Metabolism Calculator from Sanborn Testers, copyrighted in 1936, and likely used by psychiatrists. This item was included at the time of purchase.
