Neuroimaging & New Technologies
Overview
Neuroimaging and new technology research explores alternatives to traditional polygraph testing, including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG/P300), eye tracking, thermal imaging, voice stress analysis, and machine learning approaches to deception detection. These technologies aim to measure deception-related processes more directly than peripheral physiological responses.
fMRI-based lie detection gained significant attention after Langleben and colleagues identified brain regions (anterior cingulate cortex, prefrontal cortex) that show increased activation during deception. However, the 2010 court case United States v. Semrau established that fMRI lie detection had not yet met the Daubert standard for admissibility. EEG-based approaches, particularly Brain Fingerprinting (Farwell), have been admitted in some courts.
New technology studies often report high accuracy rates in tightly controlled laboratory conditions but face significant challenges in real-world application. Key questions include: scalability, cost, susceptibility to countermeasures, and whether results generalize from laboratory to field conditions.
