Field Validity Studies
Overview
Field validity studies evaluate polygraph accuracy using real criminal cases rather than laboratory simulations. These studies are considered more ecologically valid than laboratory research because they involve genuine stakes, real suspects, and actual criminal investigations — conditions that cannot be fully replicated in controlled settings.
Field studies consistently report higher accuracy rates than laboratory studies, though this may partly reflect methodological artifacts. The confession-based criterion used in most field studies (where ground truth is established by subsequent confessions) has been criticized for inflating accuracy estimates because confessions are often obtained by the same examiner who conducted the test.
When evaluating field studies, check how ground truth was established. The strongest designs use independent criteria (DNA evidence, surveillance footage, or judicial outcomes) rather than confessions obtained during post-test interrogation. Also check whether the study used independent blind scoring or relied on the original examiner's judgment.
