Abstract
This study examined whether the mismatch between people's beliefs about detecting deception (favoring behavioral cues) and their actual detection experiences (relying on contextual information) persists when the specificity of questions is controlled. Participants reported their beliefs about lie detection and then described how they detected either a specific lie, several lies, or lies in general. Regardless of question specificity, participants emphasized behavioral cues in beliefs but contextual information in actual experiences, confirming that behavioral-cue beliefs are resistant to personal experience.

The criminology student sample adds an important dimension. These students likely had more formal education about deception than typical laypersons, yet still exhibited the beliefs-experience disconnect. This suggests that even domain-relevant education may not overcome deeply held intuitions about how deception manifests.
Limitations & Considerations
The predominantly criminology student sample might have led participants to report not only detection indicators but also mere suspicion ones, potentially inflating behavioral cue reports in the revealing information condition. This could explain why the behavioral-contextual difference, while still present, may have been smaller than in some prior studies with general population samples.
The study relied on retrospective self-reports, which are subject to memory biases and reconstruction effects. Participants might not accurately recall the actual cues or information that led them to detect deception, instead reporting what they believe should have been relevant. Additionally, non-behavioral indicators play a major role in merely eliciting suspicion, and the coding scheme may not have fully distinguished between cues that confirmed deception versus those that merely raised initial doubts.
Practical Applications
For practitioners—investigators, security personnel, HR professionals—this research delivers a clear message: trust contextual evidence over behavioral hunches. Useful strategies and the most useful strategy to detect each lie were much more often non-behavioral than behavioral. Training should emphasize investigating inconsistencies, seeking corroborating evidence, and gathering third-party information rather than interpreting nonverbal behavior.
The persistence of behavioral beliefs despite contradictory experience suggests that effective training must go beyond simply presenting statistics about behavioral cues' unreliability. Programs should include reflective exercises that help practitioners consciously examine their own past successful detections, making explicit that contextual information—not behavior—typically revealed the truth. Understanding this beliefs-experience gap is the first step toward bridging it in professional practice.
