About Jan Stefan Widacki

Jan Stefan Widacki (born 6 January 1948 in Kraków) is a Polish lawyer, historian, essayist, academic (professor since 1988), diplomat and politician. In 1969, Widacki graduated from law at the Jagiellonian University. He was a faculty member of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (from 1977) and the University of Silesia (1983–1990). Studies on polygraph examinations in the Department of Criminalistics at the University of Silesia began in 1977 when Jan Widacki joined the Department and brought with him the first polygraph equipment from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. He is professor of criminology and criminal justice, Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University. Prof. Jan Widacki LL.D. Editor-in-Chief of European Polygraph. Beyond academia, he was a vice minister of interior in the Cabinet of Tadeusz Mazowiecki (1990–1992), Polish ambassador to Lithuania (1992–1996), and Member to the Sejm (2007–2011).

Jan Widacki is one of the pioneer in the field of experimental research in polygraph examinations in Poland, and one of the pioneers in the field of performing such examinations for purposes of criminal proceedings. His groundbreaking 1978 collaboration with Frank Horvath, "An Experimental Investigation of the Relative Validity and Utility of the Polygraph Technique and Three Other Common Methods of Criminal Identification," published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences, became a foundational study in the field. Widacki's research spans multiple domains: he has conducted extensive work on historical foundations of polygraph examination, having authored comprehensive histories of the field that trace development from ancient lie detection methods to modern psychophysiological testing. His recent work explores emerging technologies, including experiments with infrared cameras to detect facial temperature changes as deception indicators and facial expression analysis using FaceReader software. He has also contributed significantly to understanding the legal framework for polygraph use in Poland and conducted important studies on the diagnostic value of polygraph examinations and the galvanic skin response (GSR) as a deception indicator.

Widacki has achieved exceptional standing in the international polygraph community. Jan Widacki, European Editor Email: [email protected] European Polygraph is an international journal devoted to the publication of original investigations, observations, scholarly inquiries, and book reviews on the subject of polygraph examinations. He is a member of: American Polygraph Association, The British and European Polygraph Association, International Society of Polygraph Examiners, Ukrainian Polygraph Association (honorary member), Euroasiatic Polygraph Association (honorary member). His 28 studies in the database reflect a highly productive collaborative research program, frequently working with a team that includes his son Michał Widacki, as well as Anna Szuba-Boroń, Bartosz Wójcik, and others. His 2017 book Historia badań poligraficznych (History of Polygraph Examinations) has been recognized as the first comprehensive historical treatment of the field and has been translated into Ukrainian for international dissemination.

Widacki's work bridges multiple disciplines, integrating law, criminology, forensic science, psychology, and psychophysiology. His interdisciplinary approach is evident in his historical research on figures like Major Ludwik Krzewiński (creator of Polish narcoanalysis) and John Augustus Larson, his legal analyses of polygraph admissibility in criminal proceedings, and his experimental investigations of new detection technologies. This breadth reflects his broader academic contributions beyond polygraph research, including work in criminology, forensic medicine history, and criminal justice policy. His unique combination of practical experience (as a government minister and diplomat), academic expertise, and editorial leadership has made him a central figure in European polygraph science for over four decades.
