About James Allan Matte
James Allan Matte is President of Matte Polygraph Service, Inc., located in Williamsville, New York, and Director of the Matte Institute of Polygraph Science. A former Special Agent with the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI) and a retired Special Agent of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigations Command (CID), he attended the Backster School of Lie Detection in New York City before becoming a civilian polygraphist. Matte graduated from Empire State University with a bachelor's degree in criminalistics in 1976, and founded his polygraph service that same year.
Matte is best known for developing the Quadri-Track Zone Comparison Technique, which extends the method devised by Cleve Backster. First published in 1977 in the Newsletter of the Empire State Polygraph Society and subsequently in greater detail in Polygraph, Journal of the American Polygraph Association in December 1978, the technique introduced significant innovations including an "Inside Track" with questions addressing the examinee's fear and hope that an error may be made on the test. His field research has resulted in three textbooks including "Forensic Psychophysiology Using the Polygraph," an 800-page tome still used in classrooms around the world, including Russia, along with two supplements and more than 50 scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals. His research has focused on scoring systems, habituation effects, minimum chart requirements, and the psychological structure of comparison question techniques.
Matte is the American Editor of the International Society of Polygraph Examiners and a full member of the American Polygraph Association. He is also the Honorary President of the British Polygraph Association, Honorary Life member of the Pennsylvania Polygraph Examiners Association, the American Society for Testing and Materials, the Society for Psychophysiological Research and the Association for Psychological Science. He is the recipient of the prestigious John E. Reid Memorial Award for Distinguished Achievements in Polygraph Research, Teaching or Writing awarded by the American Polygraph Association. He was also presented with the Robert & Mary Ann Henson Memorial Award as the Outstanding Graduate of the Backster School of Lie Detection. His frequent collaborators include Israeli researchers Tuvia Shurany and Einat Stein, with whom he has conducted validation studies of his techniques.
In 1983, Matte conducted a televised polygraph examination of Khalil Islam for a show produced by Columbia Pictures and hosted by F. Lee Bailey. Islam had been convicted of murdering Malcolm X in 1965 but maintained his innocence. The polygraph showed that Islam was truthful, and in 2021, after decades of investigation, Islam was exonerated by the Manhattan DA's office and the New York State Supreme Court. In 2021, polygraphists in Ukraine were trained to use his Matte Quadri-Track ZCT at an international webinar led by the Academy for Scientific Investigative Training, demonstrating the continuing international influence of his work.

A Letter to the Editor Regarding the APA's Terminology Reference for the Science of Psychophysiological Detection of Deception
The letter presents specific critiques of terminology standards proposed by the APA for polygraph practice and research. [002] 2021 European PolygraphHistory of Polygraph Examination by Jan Widacki, Polskie Towarzystwo Kryminalistyczne, Warszawa 2021
The book is recognized as one of the most complete, scholarly, and well-sourced works on polygraph history, providing richer documentation of European contributions to the field than traditional histories and… [003] 2020 European PolygraphForemost Changes in Polygraph in Last 100 Years
Matte identified key transformations including the evolution from basic lie detection methods to validated testing techniques with computerized scoring systems and standardized practices. [004] 2018 European PolygraphSetting the Record Concerning the Differences Between the Matte Quadri-Track and the Backster Zone Comparison Techniques
The MQTZCT introduced substantive innovations distinguishing it from Backster's technique, including lower truth cut-off scores (+4 vs. ±5), Fear/Hope of Error questions addressing the Othello Error, and the Dual Equal… [005] 2013 European PolygraphThe Connection between Score Threshold, Rate of Inconclusives and Minimum Number of Charts Required for Decision of Truth or Deception
Higher scoring thresholds increase accuracy while maintaining manageable inconclusive rates, with +3 and +1 score thresholds demonstrating equivalent 0.0 error rates. [006] 2013 European PolygraphfMRI Lie Detection Validity and Admissibility as Evidence in Court and Applicability of the Court's Ruling to Polygraph Testing
The Sixth Circuit's rejection of fMRI lie detection in Semrau established the first appellate precedent against brain-based deception detection, emphasizing unreliable error rates and lack of real-world validation beyond laboratory… [007] 2012 European PolygraphCritique of Meta-Analytic Survey of Criterion Accuracy of Validated Polygraph Techniques
The critique identified significant methodological flaws and biases in the APA meta-analysis, particularly in the evaluation and exclusion of certain zone comparison techniques from validation standards. [008] 2012 European PolygraphMinimum Number of Polygraph Charts Required to Reach a Conclusion of Truth or Deception in Psychophysiological Veracity Examinations
The study provided a mathematical framework for determining chart collection requirements based on reliability coefficients, questioning whether the standard two-chart minimum is scientifically justified. [009] 2012 European PolygraphEffect of the Stimulation Test Administered Before and After the First Relevant Chart of the Control Question Test
The research examined how stimulation test timing influences examinee psychological set and physiological response patterns to relevant and comparison questions across multiple chart positions. [010] 2012 JAM Publications (Book)Forensic Psychophysiology Using the Polygraph: Scientific Truth Verification, Lie Detection
This comprehensive synthesis establishes a foundational reference that has become an enduring source within the polygraph profession, addressing both theoretical understanding and practical application. [011] 2011 European PolygraphPsychological Aspects of the Quadri-Track Zone Comparison Technique and Attendant Benefits of its Inside Track
The Inside Track mechanism theoretically addresses the major cause of false positives and inconclusives by quantifying innocent examinees' fear of error and guilty examinees' hope for error, with field validation… [012] 2011 European PolygraphEffect of Habituation to Least Threatening Zone Questions on the Most Threatening Zone Comparison Questions in Psychophysiological Veracity Examinations
62.9% of confirmed deceptive cases showed higher scores in subsequent charts, supporting differential habituation theory where deceptive examinees maintain or increase responsivity to relevant questions while potentially habituating to comparison… [013] 2010 European PolygraphA Field Study of the Backster Zone Comparison Technique's Either-Or Rule and Scoring System Versus Two Other Scoring Systems When Relevant Question Elicits Strong Response
