What Is Hyperventilation?
Hyperventilation is abnormally rapid and deep breathing that exceeds the body's metabolic needs, causing excessive expulsion of carbon dioxide and a resulting increase in blood pH (respiratory alkalosis). In polygraph testing, hyperventilation can occur as a stress response to the examination situation, as a symptom of anxiety or panic, or as a deliberate physical countermeasure attempt to disrupt respiratory data.
Impact on Polygraph Data
Hyperventilation significantly affects the respiratory channel, producing large, rapid breathing cycles that obscure the question-specific respiratory changes (suppression, slowing, apnea) that scoring systems evaluate. It can also affect the cardiovascular channel through its effects on blood pH, cardiac output, and blood pressure. Severe hyperventilation may render the respiratory data unscorable.
Examiner Response
If hyperventilation occurs, the examiner should pause chart collection, help the examinee calm their breathing, determine the cause (anxiety vs. deliberate disruption), and resume only when eupnea (normal breathing) is restored. If hyperventilation appears deliberate, it may constitute purposeful non-cooperation. Persistent hyperventilation that cannot be resolved may indicate the examinee is unsuitable for testing at that time.
