What Is Deception?
Deception is the deliberate act of providing false information, omitting relevant information, or creating a misleading impression with the conscious intention of causing another person to hold a belief the communicator knows to be untrue. In the context of psychophysiological detection of deception (PDD), understanding exactly what constitutes deception is foundational — the entire discipline rests on the principle that deliberate deception produces measurable physiological changes that can be distinguished from truthful responding.
The Role of Intent
The critical element separating deception from mere inaccuracy is intent. A person who provides incorrect information because they genuinely misremember an event is not being deceptive, even though their statement is factually wrong. Conversely, a person who makes a technically accurate statement while deliberately omitting key context that would change its meaning is being deceptive. This distinction matters enormously in polygraph testing because the physiological responses measured by the instrument are driven by the examinee's psychological state — specifically, the cognitive and emotional processes associated with knowingly attempting to mislead.
If an examinee genuinely believes what they are saying, they are unlikely to produce the physiological response pattern associated with deception, regardless of whether their belief is objectively correct. How the Polygraph Relates to Deception
It is important to understand that the polygraph does not detect deception directly. No instrument can read the mind or determine the truth of a statement. Forms of Deception

- Misdirection — Providing technically accurate but intentionally misleading information designed to steer the listener to a false conclusion

The dual process theory posits that deception requires suppressing an automatic truth response and constructing a deliberate false one, creating cognitive load and measurable arousal.
Deception vs. Polygraph Error
Inconsistencies between an examinee's statements and objective ground truth do not automatically indicate deception. An examinee may genuinely believe something that is factually wrong, may have been subjected to memory contamination, or may define the terms of a question differently than the examiner intended. These scenarios may appear to be errors of the PDD process when in fact no intentional deception occurred. This is why question formulation and thorough pre-test discussion are essential safeguards against false positive outcomes.
