The cardio-pneumo-psychograph was a two-channel polygraph developed by John Larson in the 1920s for use in criminal investigations. Recording both cardiovascular and respiratory data simultaneously, it was one of the earliest instruments to qualify as a true polygraph.

What Is a Cardio-Pneumo-Psychograph?

The cardio-pneumo-psychograph is an early polygraph instrument that combined the measurement of cardiovascular activity, respiratory activity, and psychogalvanic (electrodermal) responses into a single recording device. The name reflects its three measurement channels: cardio (heart), pneumo (breathing), and psycho (psychological/electrodermal). The instrument represents an important step in the evolution from single-channel devices to the multi-channel polygraph instruments used in modern practice.

Historical Significance

The development of instruments that simultaneously recorded multiple physiological channels was a breakthrough in the history of psychophysiological detection of deception. Earlier instruments — such as the sphygmograph (cardiovascular only), the pneumograph (respiratory only), and the galvanograph (electrodermal only) — could each record only one physiological channel. Researchers and practitioners recognised that combining multiple channels provided more reliable discrimination between deceptive and truthful subjects, because different individuals may show their strongest responses in different physiological systems.

This multi-channel approach is the foundation of all modern polygraph testing. Contemporary digital instruments record these same three core channels (plus additional sensors such as activity sensors and plethysmographs) simultaneously and in real time.

Relationship to Modern Instruments

The cardio-pneumo-psychograph is a direct ancestor of the modern polygraph. While the recording technology has evolved dramatically — from mechanical smoked drum or ink-pen kymograph recordings to digital computer displays — the fundamental principle of simultaneously measuring cardiovascular, respiratory, and electrodermal responses remains unchanged. Modern scoring systems and computerised algorithms evaluate features from all three channels, each contributing independent diagnostic information to the total score.

Other early multi-channel instruments include the Keeler Polygraph, developed by Leonarde Keeler, which became the first commercially produced polygraph instrument and incorporated similar multi-channel recording capability.
