POLYGRAPH TESTING: Practical Manual of Forensic Psychophysiology: Methodology, Execution, and Fields of Application
Our Expert Review
Landa's manual sets out to be a complete technical and operational reference for forensic psychophysiology, aimed at working examiners, criminologists, expert witnesses, investigators, security practitioners and legal professionals rather than general readers. According to its published description, it deliberately rejects the popular "lie detector" framing, presenting the polygraph instead as a system for acquiring and analysing physiological responses associated with fear of detection, cognitive load and autonomic nervous system activation — the same scientific framing we use with clients when explaining what an examination can and cannot establish.
The author has since published the manual's full syllabus, and it is considerably more specific than the original listing suggested: twelve chapters across three parts. Part I covers the stimulus pathway from acoustic input through to autonomic response, the examiner's own role and biases, and a hardware chapter on the data acquisition system — transduction, amplification, filtering, sampling, pneumograph mechanics, cardiovascular tracking and electrodermal contact engineering. Part II walks the examination itself in order: room conditions, the pre-test phase, question construction, in-test rhythm and inter-question timing, countermeasures, and post-test scoring using the Empirical Scoring System with algorithmic cross-checks. Part III applies all of it to corporate screening, criminal casework and PCSOT, and to high-security and civil work.
Two emphases stand out. The instrumentation chapter goes further into the electronics than most practitioner texts bother with, which matters if you are ever asked to explain in court what the instrument actually records and how. And the manual keeps returning to documentation and defensibility — report writing, record preservation, data-destruction protocols and legal boundaries — which is the part most practitioners are weakest on, and where poorly run examinations tend to fail.
How it compares: where Krapohl and Shaw's Fundamentals of Polygraph Practice is the evidence-based academic anchor, and Matte's work is encyclopedic in its treatment of technique, Landa's positioning is operational — the workflow from pre-test through to a defensible report. It is also unusually inclusive of private-sector casework, including infidelity and civil disputes, which dominate real-world practice but are thinly covered in the standard texts.
Read the strong claims critically. The publisher's own description of Chapter 11 states that regular post-conviction testing drops sexual recidivism "from 40% to under 5%" — a far more decisive figure than the supervision literature actually supports, where findings are mixed and measured effects are modest. We flag it because it is exactly the kind of number that ends up quoted in court, and because it appears in the promotional summary rather than in text we can check. Treat the operational chapters as the value here, and verify any statistic independently before you rely on it.
An honest caveat. We have now read the author's own detailed account of the book's scope, method and authorship, but not the book itself, and there is still no independent review record for it. How this manual was compiled and who signed off on it materially affect how much weight to give it.
What’s Inside
Sets out why the "lie detector" label is wrong, establishes homeostasis and baseline as the biological zero-point, and traces an acoustic stimulus from the ear through thalamic relay and language processing to the amygdala and the autonomic response that follows. Introduces the respiratory, cardiovascular and electrodermal recording channels.
Repositions the examiner from interrogator to clinical forensic expert. Covers rapport as a physiological stabilisation tool, examiner cognitive bias — including the Othello error, where an innocent subject's fear of being disbelieved is misread as guilt — and clinical assessment of whether a subject is physically, psychologically and toxicologically fit to be tested.
The hardware chapter: the data acquisition system, transduction, medical-grade amplification, active analog filtering and analog-to-digital conversion, double-pneumograph mechanics, blood pressure cuff hydraulics and the dicrotic notch, photoplethysmography, and silver/silver-chloride electrode design for electrodermal recording.
Treats the examination room as part of the instrument: acoustic isolation against startle responses, removal of visual and temporal distractions, thermal stability to avoid sweat-gland saturation, and seating geometry that prevents the examiner from unintentionally cueing the subject. Also covers the informed consent document.
Argues that most of a test's validity is secured before any chart is recorded. Covers behavioural calibration and baseline mapping, forcing genuine memory retrieval to see how the subject responds when being truthful, narrowing the issue under test, and the expectation-setting that shapes performance.
Rules for constructing questions: avoiding emotionally loaded wording that produces reaction regardless of truthfulness, using concrete action verbs, narrowing the subject's room for moral rationalisation, and the respective roles of irrelevant, relevant and comparison questions in the test structure.
Running the charts: disciplined and neutral vocal delivery, chart-length limits tied to how long the cuff can safely stay inflated, the 20–25 second inter-question interval that lets the subject return to baseline, multi-chart replication and question rotation.
Detecting and neutralising countermeasures — physical ones such as tongue biting and toe pressure, mental ones such as arithmetic or deliberate recall, and pharmacological ones such as beta-blockers and topical antiperspirants — along with movement-sensing seat pads and the administrative finding of purposeful non-cooperation.
Artifacting to exclude coughs, swallows and external noise from the data, phasic feature extraction, the Empirical Scoring System with spot scores and horizontal totals, and cut-off scores producing the Deception Indicated, No Deception Indicated or Inconclusive outcome, cross-checked against computerised scoring algorithms.
Workplace application: pre-employment and periodic screening against insider threat, deterrence effects, question areas that are legally off-limits such as religion, politics and union membership under EPPA in the US and GDPR in Europe, narrowing from multi-issue screening to single-issue verification, and writing the final suitability report.
Protocols for high-pressure casework including homicide, violent assault and sexual offences, breaking consent down into measurable elements; evidence preservation and cryptographic sealing of records; post-conviction sex offender testing as a containment tool; vicarious trauma on the examiner; and duty-to-warn boundaries. Note the recidivism figure we flag in the review above.
Critical infrastructure and executive vetting, NDA enforcement, inheritance and domestic-theft disputes, digital-era infidelity from messaging to dating apps, a stated prohibition on testing children under 12, exposure of media polygraph fraud, and protecting against liability claims through data-destruction protocols and professional ethics codes.
Who Should Read This
Examiners who want a single operational reference spanning pre-test through to a defensible report, and legal or security professionals who need to understand how a properly structured examination is built. Newcomers should start with Krapohl and Shaw. Read this one alongside a title that has an independent review record, rather than in place of it.
About the Author
José A. Landa is President of the European Polygraph Association and Director of the European Polygraph Academy, writing from academic, institutional and operational leadership roles rather than from a primarily research background. His stated motivation for the manual is that European practitioners have long had to work from translated, decades-old texts written before the last decade of changes in instrumentation, scoring and law.
Those same positions are the reason to read the book's validation claims carefully. The academy that supplied the expert review, the university imprint on the copyright page and the association whose ethics code the text cites are all bodies the author leads. That does not make the content wrong, but it does mean the endorsement behind it is internal, and it should not be read as independent professional-body assessment.
