Polygraph Examiner

Role and Responsibilities

As an Extra-Help Polygraph Examiner, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Administering Polygraph Examinations: Conduct criminal, pre-employment, and administrative polygraph examinations for the department. You will be responsible for recording, interpreting, and analyzing the physiological responses of individuals to determine the veracity of their statements.
  • Background Investigations: Perform thorough background checks on individuals as part of the polygraph examination process, ensuring that all candidates meet the stringent requirements of the department.
  • Related Duties: As needed, you may be called upon to support other aspects of the department’s investigative operations, contributing your expertise to ensure the department upholds the highest standards of law enforcement.

Employment Status and Conditions

It is important to note that this is an Extra-Help position. Successful candidates will be considered at-will employees throughout their term of employment, without the status of regular county employees. This flexibility allows the department to adapt to the evolving needs of its investigative units.

Conditions of Employment
  1. Background Check: All applicants will undergo a comprehensive background investigation, including fingerprinting and a polygraph examination. Candidates must have a clean legal record, free of felony convictions.
  2. Appointment Status: This role is an Extra-Help position, meaning incumbents will not attain regular county employee status.
  3. Work Schedule: The position primarily involves day shifts, though flexibility may be required based on department needs.
  4. Visa Sponsorship: Please note that San Bernardino County is unable to sponsor visas for applicants. All candidates must have the legal right to work in the United States at the time of application and throughout their employment.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Certification: Possess a current certificate from an American Polygraph Association (APA) accredited Polygraph Examiners Course.
  • Experience:
    • Option A: At least one year of full-time equivalent experience in administering polygraph examinations.
    • Option B: Three years of experience in a law enforcement environment, with duties that include conducting interviews and interrogations.
  • Substitution: A Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Social Science, or a related field can substitute for up to one year of the required law enforcement experience under Option B.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Lafayette polygraph instruments (LX-4000 or LX-5000).
  • A solid working knowledge of the Zone Comparison Technique and numerical scoring.
  • Membership in good standing with the California Association of Polygraph Examiners (CAPE).
