The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is currently recruiting for Extra-Help Polygraph Examiners to support its Specialized Investigations Division. About the Role

Polygraph Examiners in this position play a vital role in ensuring the integrity of investigations and pre-employment processes. Responsibilities include:

  • Administering criminal, pre-employment, and administrative polygraph examinations.
  • Recording, interpreting, and analyzing examinee responses.
  • Conducting background investigations to verify candidate suitability.
  • Preparing and maintaining detailed documentation.
  • Performing related duties as required by the department.

This is an Extra-Help (at-will) role; incumbents do not attain regular County employee status.

Compensation & Work Details

  • Salary: $79,913 – $110,032 annually (paid per hour; equivalent annualized rate).
  • Location: San Bernardino, CA (on-site).
  • Schedule: Primarily day shifts; no night, weekend, or holiday requirements listed.
  • Employment Type: Extra-Help (temporary, at-will).

Conditions of Employment

  1. Background Check: Must pass fingerprinting, a comprehensive background investigation, and a polygraph examination. Applicants with felony convictions are not eligible.
  2. Appointment: Extra-Help employees will not gain permanent County status.
  3. Sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available. Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have a current certificate from an APA-accredited Polygraph Examiners Course, plus one of the following:

  • Option A: One (1) year of full-time equivalent polygraph examiner experience.
  • Option B: Three (3) years of law-enforcement experience, including conducting interviews and/or interrogations.

Substitution: A bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Social Science, or a related field may substitute for up to one (1) year of law-enforcement experience under Option B.

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Hands-on experience administering polygraph examinations.
  • Proficiency with Lafayette LX-4000 or LX-5000 instruments.
  • Knowledge of the Zone Comparison Technique and numerical scoring.
  • Active membership in the California Association of Polygraph Examiners (CAPE).
